This expanded edition has a dramatic increase of material (16 new chapters) over the 2012 first edition, based on clinical experience and published research data, and includes several new drugs, monitors, and anesthetic/analgesic techniques. The book is geared toward providing complex anesthetic information in a practical way, without requiring the daunting task of reading a theory-laden textbook. The chapters are written in a clear and practical way by the author and 18 contributors. Given the target audience, they have done a great job of supplying a resource that is sure to be well received. This is a much more thorough edition with 16 new chapters and over 100 pages of new material, but the book retains its appeal with pleasing, high-quality visual aids and appropriate depth. It continues to be a good introduction to the topic of small animal anesthesia and pain management. Most notable is the addition of chapters on perioperative lab work, transfusion therapy, and anesthesia for specific procedures, as well as additional discussions of multimodal pain management. The latter is a timely topic as practitioners continue to struggle with the reduced availability of opioids and the new increasing need for opioid-sparing analgesic techniques. I enjoyed reading this book. It is a concise reference on clinically applicable topics that I would recommend to veterinary students, technicians/nurses, and general veterinary practitioners specifically for its complete discussions.
